Sciatica Treatment Nashik
If you are having recurrent episodes of low backache and sudden severe shooting pain that radiates from lower back to thigh or leg or foot you are most probably suffering from sciatica. The pain is due to irritation or pressure on sciatic nerve, degenerative disc disease or narrowing of spinal canal. The pain of sciatica is generally one sided, aggravated by sitting, lifting and twisting, coughing, sneezing, staining at stools. The disease is really debilitating, affecting your movements and normal personal routine. causative factors may be degeneration of disc, spondylolisthesis of isthmus, lumbar spinal narrowing – stenosis, piriformis muscle syndrome, prolapsed inter-vertibral Disc (PID) and dysfunction of sacroiliac joint. MRI is essential to correctly diagnose cause of sciatica. X ray is of NO USE in this condition.
Acute Sciatica – Management –
- Bed rest for one or two weeks followed by mobilisation
- Much of initial pain of acute sciatica is due to inflammation therefore analgesics and steroids are prescribed. In spite of this fact that steroid injection in spine has no advantage over oral use, yet it is used unnecessarily.
- Surgery is considered ONLY IF conservative treatment over month does not provide relief or worsens the pain, or there is restricted movement of straight leg raise test.
- Rest has major role in conservative management of pain.
- Dr Pardeshi Acupuncture Pain Therapy has expertise in managing acute sciatica treatment in Nashik.
Chronic Sciatica – Chronic Sciatica may be due to –
Degeneration of disc Even though disc degeneration is a natural process of aging, some people may have one or more degenerated discs in the lower back which can irritate a nerve root and cause sciatica. Inflammatory proteins from inside the disc become exposed and irritate the nerve root(s) in the area.
Spondylitis of Isthmus – This is condition where a small stress fracture allows one vertebral body to slip forward on another; say, if the L5 vertebra slips forward over the S1 vertebra. This esults into combination of disc space collapse, the fracture, and the vertebral body slipping forward. Thus the nerve fibre of sciatic nerve can get pinched and cause sciatic pain.
Lumbar spinal narrowing – Stenosis Narrowing of the spinal canal can be common cause of sciatica. Lumbar spinal narrowing is common in adults over age 60 and related to natural aging in the spine. The narrowing typically results from a combination of one or more of the following pathology: enlarged facet joints, overgrowth of soft tissue, and a bulging disc placing pressure on the nerve roots, causing sciatica.
Piriformis muscle syndrome – The sciatic nerve runs under the Piriformis muscle in the buttock and can get irritated. If the Piriformis muscle irritates or pinches a nerve root that comprises the sciatic nerve, it can cause sciatica-type pain.
Dysfunction of Sacroiliac joint – Sacroiliac joint can also irritate the L5 nerve, which lies on top of the sacroiliac joint since it is located at the bottom of the spine can cause sciatica-type pain. All above conditions are amenable to Dr Pardeshi Acupuncture pain therapy with sciatica treatment in Nashik.
A herniated disc is sometimes referred to as a slipped disc, ruptured disc, bulging disc, protruding disc, or a pinched nerve. When the soft inner core of the disc (nucleus pulpous) leaks out, herniated disc occurs through the fibrous outer core (annulus) and may irritates the contiguous nerve root. There can be many reasons for sciatica and prolapsed inter-vertebral disc is one of them. Therefore sciatica is the most common symptom of a lumbar herniated disc but prolapsed inter-vertebral disc is not most common cause of sciatica. That means, if there is prolapsed disc, sciatica is most common symptom but if sciatica is there prolapsed disc is just one of reason which is not common one.
Sit on the floor with one leg extended backward and the other in front with the knee turned inward. This is sometimes known as a hurdler’s stretch. If you are positioned properly in this most difficult exercises at home, you will notice complete freedom in your sacrum and lower back. Your hips will be separated, and your core will be engaged.
Gently rock forward on your buttocks that corresponds to the bent leg. As you contract your gluteus muscles, you should feel the main portion of your body’s weight lift off of the floor. Hold the contracted position for three seconds and relax. As you relax, you will settle back down into the starting position. Do this motion 12-20 times and switch legs.
This motion will help the sciatic nerves rediscover their prime pathways. If they are stuck underneath certain muscle complexes, this exercise will prompt them to realign with your body’s natural curves. This is an incredible stretch that should accompany any lower body workout. It also helps shape the muscles in the legs. Above exercises are parts of Dr Pardeshi Acupuncture Pain Therapy for sciatica treatment in Nashik.
Lie on a flat surface in a supine position (on your back). This can be a carpeted floor, yoga mat, or your bed. Extend one leg outward. With a long towel wrapped, grasp the hamstring just under the knee of the other leg and pull it toward your chest until square right angles are created between your lower back, hip, knee and lower leg.
Using the towel to brace the lifted leg, slowly and gently extend your bent leg upward until it stops. You will feel a tremendous stretch in your hamstring, calve, buttocks and lower back. Be sure to keep your toes pointed in the direction of your head at all times.
This favorite of all exercises causes distal nerve gliding along the majority of the main sciatic nerve. The channels that the nerve rests in can become tight and blocked. This exercise helps to loosen the nerve pathways and elongate the muscles which may be the cause of sciatic pain. Perform 20 repetitions on each leg, and go through the routine at least twice each day. Dr Pardeshi Acupuncture Pain Therapy advise above exercises are parts of our sciatica treatment at Nashik.
Planks and Reaches
Weakness in the hips and core could be the cause of midsection strength imbalance. These imbalances can play havoc on the sciatic nerves. All variations of “planking” exercises will strengthen the core, but one variation in particular is especially helpful for sciatic pain.
Go to a four-point crawling stance on the floor (this means both hands and both knees). Keep your back parallel with the floor, and maintain a right angle in your hips. Simultaneously, extend an arm and the opposite leg outward. Do this motion slowly until you find balance and rhythm. Bring the extremities back to the starting position and do the same with the other arm and leg. Aim for 20 repetitions on each side. As you extend and pause, notice your core is engaged along with a host of tiny muscles within your lower back, legs and buttocks.
The exercise helps to gently re-teach the body how to function with proper alignment and posture. It frees the channels that house the sciatic nerves while elongating important muscles. As you reach to your body’s extent, the nerves which are being impinged or compressed will rediscover their proper position in the complex structure of your legs and gluteus. This is a common movement found in many of the most effective and popular yoga routines for a reason. It builds balance, helps with pain management and causes the body to relearn how to properly move. Above exercises are part of Dr Pardeshi Acupuncture Pain Therapy for sciatica treatment in Nashik.
Standing Back Bends
It can be performed several times each day and does not require special equipment or space. As much a 5-10 minutes of this exercise is recommended for the best results.
Stand upright with your feet pointed directly forward and a little more than shoulder width apart. Look straight ahead, or just slightly upward. Place both hands on the sides of your hips. With a controlled rocking motion, lean back at the waist. Do not allow your lower body to project forward, or your neck to travel back. The distance that can be travelled back will vary great from person to person. Everyone has natural structural “stops” in their skeleton, so never bring your torso to the point of hyperextension. Use your core muscles and Sartorius (front of the leg) to return to the upright position. If you notice heavy and laboured breathing, you are stretching too far. Close the rocking distance.
Sometimes sciatica originates in the iliac region of the pelvis rather that the channels in the legs. This lower back exercise will help to free the tubes of the sciatic nerve that are close to the waist. As a side note, when you are attempting any of these exercises, try to stay hydrated until your symptoms come under control. Muscles can be the cause of symptoms. Paradoxically, they can be the key to pain alleviation. Hydrated muscles will respond better to stretching and exercise. Above exercises are part of our sciatica treatment in Nashik.
Stationary Vibration Machines
Few gyms and recreation centers have vibration devices, but they are common in physical therapy centers. The theory behind the effectiveness of vibration is unique amongst methods, but it is sound. Many people have experienced incredible progress in getting rid of pain with vibration platforms.
The theory of vibration to alleviate pain is thus. When the body senses that a portion of the muscular-skeletal structure is damaged or out of alignment, it will release chemicals and nervous impulses that cause regions to tense and spasm. This is an effort of the wonderful human machine to protect damaged tissues by creating a state of inflexibility and painful warning signs. This is why sciatic pain is most always accompanied by cramping, stiffness and shooting or throbbing.
When you stand on a horizontally-rocking platform, the vibrational waves travel from your feet to your head. They gently confuse the muscles, tendons and nerves into a “dance” that tends to counteract the compression around affected nerve points. As the compressed regions relax, blood and nutrients are directed to damaged and sensitive areas along the sciatic nerve tract. Vibration motion tells the brain and the body that it is “okay” to fix themselves and return to optimal function. 10 minutes on a vibrational platform at a moderate rate of agitation, three or four times per week, could be the key to getting rid of intense sciatic nerve pain. Incorporating any of the previously described exercises after vibration therapy will enhance recovery.
