Cancer Palliative Treatment
Palliative treatment is designed to relieve symptoms, and improve your quality of life by multidisciplinary approach for people with life-limiting illnesses. It can be used at any stage of an illness if there are troubling symptoms, such as pain or sickness. It can also be used to reduce or control the side effects of cancer treatments. It focuses on providing people with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress, , anxiety, depression, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping and any other symptoms that may be causing distress of the terminal diagnosis. The goal of such therapy is to improve quality of life for both the person and their family.
Palliative care may be needed in any serious diseases which are not going to be cured , like –
Congestive Heart Failure
Chronic Pulmonary Disease
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
And many more…
It’s very effective for symptoms such as acute and chronic pain, nausea and vomiting, xerostomia, vasomotor symptoms, fatigue and dyspnoea. Use of Acupuncture is being increasing for a multiplicity of symptoms in patients with cancer and those requiring palliative care. At present half of patients survive at least 5 years beyond their initial diagnosis of cancer is increasingly seen as a chronic disease. Multiple symptoms occur in patients with cancer long after their treatment, like surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Since treatments become more successful, patients face the additional challenges of dealing with both the physical and psychological consequences of their condition.
Symptoms of radiation-induced proctitis and bowel problems, radio-necrotic ulcers (which classically never heal) and radio-necrosis of the jaw in patients on bis-phosphonates are treated with varying degrees of success.
It is encouraging to see that acupuncture may also be beneficial in helping to alleviate the troublesome symptoms associated with non-cancer conditions such as HIV where the gastrointestinal symptoms associated with antiretrovirals can greatly adversely affect quality of life.
Dr Pardeshi Acupuncture Therapy has been successful in symptomatic treatment of Cancer HIV Parkinsonism and other serious terminal diseases.
US National Library of Medicine reports –
The result of our systematic review suggested that the effectiveness of acupuncture in palliative care for cancer patients is promising, especially in reducing chemotherapy or radiotherapy induced side effects and cancer pain. Acupuncture may be an appropriate adjunctive treatment for palliative care.”
